NHCA showed their support for the request to increase sanitation at the encampments on M and L Street NE, including handwashing stations and toilets that are regularly maintained. This request follows recommendations from the Ward 6 Mutual Aid Network, People for Fairness Coalition, and a local DC Coalition addressing homelessness.
There are at least fifty unhoused community members residing at the encampments located at 2nd and L St./M St. NE who lack access to hygiene and sanitation, particularly handwashing stations and toilets. This lack of access to basic hygiene denies humans the dignity and respect they deserve. It also could negatively contribute to the spread of infectious diseases such as COVID-19. During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in the District of Columbia, the homeless remain among the most vulnerable populations. Both the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the DC Department of Health recommend frequent handwashing to lower the chance of spreading COVID-19. The NoMa/H Street Civic Association urges the Advisory Neighborhood Commission 6C (ANC6C) to call upon the Department of Human Services (DHS) alongside local coalitions and nonprofit organizations fighting homelessness to immediately provide and properly maintain handwashing stations and toilets at the 2nd and L St. and M St. NE encampments on a permanent basis.
